A new crackdown has been announced on uninsured drivers - now is the time motorists should make sure their policy provides the most suitable cover.
The first month of a new year is traditionally a time when people strive to get their finances in order as they prepare for the year ahead, but one area that could get overlooked is that of car insurance.
Yet January can be the perfect time for motorists to make sure their policy provides the best possible cover - especially as people look to make savings in all regards of their outgoings.
With talk of spending cuts and the VAT rise, British consumers should be looking to make savings in all areas of finance - and motor insurance is no exception.
New research carried out by Swiftcover.com revealed 59 per cent of Brits are looking to slash their expenditure in 2011, with nine per cent stating they would like to chop £100 off their car insurance this year.
Moreover, 41 per cent noted they would like to save money by switching their motor insurance providers, regardless of how much they put aside.
Marketing director at the website Tina Shortle commented: "This year is going to be another year for the tightening of belts for everyone in the UK."
The industry figure added: "Shopping around for the right car insurance is important if you want to make the biggest saving possible."
And while it is crucial drivers seek better cover, it is imperative the policy they do get is the most suitable for their own circumstances.
A study carried out by price comparison website moneysupermarket.com found many car owners are not actually protected to the extent they think they are.
The investigation showed some policies do not include cover for emergency accommodation or legal cover, as these extras can often add another £70 on to the cost of an annual premium price.
And the recent cold snap could mean motor insurance is even more vital, as many vehicles are being involved in collisions as they slip and slide on the hazardous surfaces.
Car insurance expert at the portal Peter Harrison noted: "For those drivers looking to take out a new car insurance policy and seeking peace of mind, especially for the winter weather conditions, checking the small print is essential to ensure you opt for a policy that ticks all the necessary boxes."
He added it may not be the best choice to always go for the cheapest option, suggesting it pays off to shop around to locate the deal that gives the correct cover at the right price.
Getting insurance is an essential process of becoming a driver, but a new crackdown on uninsured motorists may mean it is even more vital people get their cover sorted out sooner rather than later.
Road safety minister Mike Penning announced a clampdown on law-breakers, revealing the new powers will make it an offence to own an uninsured vehicle, let alone drive one.
He said: "Uninsured drivers push up premiums for other motorists and often drive with no regard for other road users, so it is vital that we do everything we can to keep them off the roads."
So get on the look-out for the best deal around. Be aware that not all policies will offer the same benefits - and the cheapest option is not always the best bet.
But get on the case, get it sorted - and get insured.
